6AQ5 amp at work532 viewsHere is a shot of my 6AQ5 amp at work. Unit now sports a nice new knob on a nice new pot. Found some nos RCA 6aq5 tubes and fisher 6AU6 tubes. Unit is using a MAC with itunes as a source. All software is loaded on MAC using Apples Lossless compression. Am using a small pair of Entergy speakers on stands.

Bread board230 viewsHere's where I breadboarded my amp. My first attempt was a PP 6b4g using an interstage and ecc99 drivers. Well, I was less than thrilled with the sound, then I remembered reading about parafeed using a CT choke. I just happed to have a pair of MQ 17173 CT chokes and so I gave it a try.

Mullard 6L6GC64 viewsHere is a Mullard 6L6GC that I pulled out of a Heathkit High voltage bench power supply. There were a pair and if they test good, I plan on probably using in some sort of SE amp.

Harmon Kardon Citation II Amp161 viewsMassive.. I purchased this amp and matching preamp from an audio buddy. Unit had several issues but does play. Issues included lots of noise. After opening it up, I discovered a few issues, fuses in the OPT cathodes, one of which was open, wrongs sized OPT cathodes resistors, wrong size and type of capacitor on the driver tube screen and a few other things. Ordered the Jim McShane power supply kit as well as the two capacitor kits.

More ground buss70 viewsThe end of the buss is terminated into the terminal strip. Also, while not part of Jim's basic power supply kit, I had in my part bin, a 50x2 F&T capacitor to add to the power supply.

Bias Supply Build74 viewsForming and insulating the leads on the rectifier and resister ahead of time makes for an easier install.

Bias Supply Build71 viewsI started by mounting the resister between T2 and T6 tabs.

Bias Supply Build74 viewsFor proper alignment I mounted the two capacitors and 1.8k resistor to the terminal strip and bent the leads to stabilize. For now I only soldered the T2 tab connection. Note - Already soldered and trimmed T2 before I thought to snap a picture.

Bias Supply Build68 viewsAnother shot. Notice the already soldered and trimmed T2 connection.

Bias Supply Build79 viewsPull the unsoldered end of the resister (T6) up out of the way for now. Same with the + side of the upper most capacitor in this picture. Then slide (tight fit) the Negative end of the rectifier through the T4 hole shared by the negative leads of the two capacitors. Slide the positive lead of the rectifier into the T1 tag hole. Solder and trim T1 and T4.

Bias Supply Build74 viewsT1 and T4 all soldered up..

Bias Supply Build73 viewsFinally, solder the open leads of the resistor and capacitor to the upper lug of T6. The Bias rebuild is complete. Tabs are still open for connections from the transformer.. Transformer White to T1, Transformer White/Orange to T2, tube bias to T4. For reference, above tabs are labeled left to right T1 through T6. T3 and T5 are not used here.

DIY TT Shelf40 viewsFirst, I built the base that mounts to the wall out of a couple pieces of 3/4 inch plywood and two pieces of 2x4. Second, used some 2x2 hardwood for the back posts. I mounted the shelving brackets before leveling and mounting the 2x2's to the base support. Note the neat cable raceway, now I can keep the interconnects and speaker cables away from high voltage.

Under side of old AM radio4 viewsHere is the under side of the AM radio. It appears to be a single ended 6aq5 amplifier. Choke input supply. I plan to replace the caps as part of the restore.

68 viewsThis was my second 400 (an auction picture). Seller just put unit in a box with news paper as packing material. Thankfully, the crappy case took the brunt of the shipping. Unit itself was not damaged. It did however; have a dead channel that I traced down to a shorted signal wire. Fixed short, replaced small caps, rebuilt bias power supply. Unit now makes very nice sound. I did not have a decent digital camera at the time, so very few pictures. I still have and use the unit. One of these days I will pull apart and take more pictures.
